Police used a new device a handheld scanner to check microchips hidden in the frames of the bikes and also checked serial numbers of engines against a database.
An Avon and Somerset spokesman said he was surprised at the high number of "stolen" machines found at the event.
Six machines from the force area of Avon &n somerset were impounded and details of other machines circulated to other police areas.
The Police spokesman added: "We hope that this will provide would-be competitors taking part in the beach race with reassurance and peace of mind that the police and industry take vehicle theft very seriously.
"Avon and Somerset is one of only a handful of forces to have formed a specialist vehicle crime unit and the new scanning is particularly useful for an event such as this," he said.
